Known commonly as the Persian buttercup, Ranunculus are famous for their multi-layered cupped flowers. Silky blossoms unfurl in late spring to early summer, held above mounding, fern-like foliage on strong stems. Ranunculus are perennial in zones 8-10; In cooler zones (1-7), they can be grown as annuals, or tubers can be dug after frost comes, stored over winter, then re-planted the following spring. Tubers resemble small claws. Plant in a sunny location in well-drained soil. Before planting, soak them for a few hours in warm water to jump-start the sprouting process. Ranunculus love moisture during the growing period and drier conditions as summer progresses, so good drainage is a must.
