(6-8' tall x 6-8' wide) Winterberries are deciduous hollies that bring year-round interest to the landscape, and the two varieties in our Winterberry Hardy Shrub Collection ensure a stunning display of brilliant berries each fall.
Winterberries are dioecious, meaning they have separate male and female plants. Winter Red is female, and flowers require pollination from a compatible male, such as Southern Gentleman Winterberry, to produce berries. The female Winter Red Winterberry is famed for her signature clusters of festive, fire engine-red fruits that persist into winter, providing food for both overwintering and migrating birds. The male, Southern Gentleman Winterberry, has attractive green foliage and small whitish-green flowers, but no berries. In late summer the female flowers, if properly pollinated, mature into clusters of vibrant berries. The splendor of these berries clustered on the branches is fully revealed when the foliage drops in autumn. Cut branches make beautiful holiday decor. The plants prefer full sun to part shade and moist soil.
Our Winterberry Hardy Shrub Collection is roughly 16' x 16' if planted together and contains 4 plants:
Winter Red Winterberry - 3 plants
Southern Gentleman Winterberry - 1 plant
*Not all plants will be in bloom at the same time, as depicted on the illustration. Plants are subject to change due to availability. If we make substitutions, we feature plants with similar attributes suitable to the garden/collection design.
